Parents: Monday, April 8, 2024, the Great North American Eclipse is set to take place. This will be one of the longest total solar eclipses of the 21st century. A solar eclipse is a lineup of the Sun, Moon, and Earth. The moon, directly between the sun and Earth, casts a shadow on our planet. In Schley County, weather permitting, we have the opportunity to see a partial eclipse; the total eclipse will be visible across the middle of the country. It is estimated that Georgia could see anywhere from 65%-80% of the eclipse. The estimated times for this partial eclipse are from around 1:45 through 3:05 p.m. We would like our students to safely experience this rare, teachable science moment. For those students with parental permission, grades 6-12 will go outside and observe the eclipse with ISO-approved protective glasses that we will provide; grades 3-5 will have a similar opportunity. Pre-K-2nd grade will not participate but will have glasses to wear for the time they are outside for car-rider pick-up, and for loading on the busses. They will be encouraged to continue wearing the glasses while they travel home. There are dangers involved in viewing an eclipse without protective eyewear. No one should look directly at the sun with his/her bare eyes. Again, Schley County will be providing protective eyewear that will make viewing the eclipse safe. We have ordered ISO-approved eclipse glasses. “Do-it-yourself” eclipse glasses, or other alternatives cannot guarantee safety. Your child’s safety is our utmost concern; we will provide—and only allow—ISO-approved eclipse glasses to be used in this experience. Please discuss with your student the importance of safety and taking precautions with eye safety. Next week, we will send additional information and permission slip home with your child. Please consider your options, sign the letter, and return it to school the next day. Thank you for your support. Please call the school if you have any questions.

Dr. Albertson’s Geometry class went outside to the football field to find the height of tall objects.  By using their height, length of shadow, and inverse trig ratios, students discovered their angle of elevation to the sun at 10:00 am.  Students then used their angle of elevation, object shadows and trigonometry  to find the height of objects such as goal posts, fences, lights and trees.
