Students in Mrs. Yarbrough's and Mrs. Mailhot's classes learned the truth about chocolate and vanilla. They read an informal piece and learned about the cacao tree and vanilla plant. Students then started a comparison writing to tell the likes and differences the two flavors had. They finished up their learning by enjoying some homemade ice cream!

Car rider parents, thank you for your patience this week as we have pushed back our opening time to 7:38 in order to accommodate for the change in our breakfast schedule. We would like to remind everyone that the safest and most efficient way to drop students off is to go through the car rider line and not try to break in line by going through the athletic complex. This causes more congestion, disrupts the flow of the line, and creates an unsafe situation for everyone. Thank you for helping us get our students in the building safely.

School Access Points - Access points are located at Union Hill Church, Ebenezer Baptist, American Legion, Pecan Village, old John Lewis school, Shady Grove Apts, and the School Board Office. These access points provide filtered internet access for student school work. The Wi-Fi connections display as SchoolBusInternetXXXX where XXXX is the unique identifier for the access point. Dear Parents, In light of the recent closure of our schools, and because many of you have requested an opportunity to reconsider online learning, we are re-opening registration for our virtual program, Edgenuity. If you choose this option for your child(ren), you must commit to this program for nine weeks for elementary students and the entire first semester for middle and high school students. Our bus drivers will also be providing hot spots for Wi-Fi connections in remote areas during school hours August 13-25. We will begin posting those locations in order for students to have access points. Passwords will be emailed directly to student accounts. If you need further help with this please message wildcathelp@schleyk12.org or call 229-937-2405. Hotspots at each school and the Board of Education are available now. An application for virtual learning can be found on the district and school websites or by following this link: https://core-docs.s3.amazonaws.com/documents/asset/uploaded_file/851390/Virtual_Learning_Program_Application__extended_.pdf The deadline for returning these applications is August 19, 2020, at 4:00 p.m. You may begin turning those applications in today, and each day, between 8:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. at the Board of Education, or you may email them to wildcathelp@schleyk12.org.

Due to recent increases in Covid cases within the county and our schools, along with the required quarantines of family members, we are closing schools to students beginning tomorrow, for a period of at least 14 days. Students who have been attending school on campus will receive instructions from their teacher(s) for distance learning over the next two weeks. Students who began virtual instruction today on Edgenuity should continue their work. Teachers and administrators will be in contact with you regarding your progress in the days to come. Notifications will continue to go out through Remind and announcements will continue to be published on Facebook. We are disappointed, to say the least, to have to make this decision, but it is in the best interest of the health of our students and faculty. Please continue to practice the recommended guidelines from the CDC by social distancing and wearing masks so that we can all return to school as soon as possible.

Parents, At the beginning of each school year, all returning parents should verify their address information, demographics, and family information online in Infinite Campus. This will be much easier than completing the forms that we have used in previous years. It is extremely important that we have your current information, especially in the case of an emergency. Please go to Infinite Campus Parent Portal, log in, then click "More" in the left column. The three areas that we need you to verify are: 1) Address Information 2) Demographics 3) Family Information If you do not have a parent portal account then you will need the last 4 digits of any of your school-age children's SSN and also his/her birthdate to lookup the unique activation key. SCE is supporting our local front line health care workers by 3D printing surgical face mask extenders. Having to wear masks all day tends to aggravate the ears, and wearing an extender relieves the pull of the elastic on one’s ears. SCE loves and appreciates each of our health care workers! Our 3D printer is a part of our technology and robotics program. Mrs. Jones is challenging her “Tinkercad” students to create an even better extender!

We will continue with our distance learning tomorrow. Packets are available for those parents/students that have previously contacted their teacher due to lack of internet access. The packets are for those students only. We highly encourage any and all assignments to be completed online as much as feasibly possible. The packets will be distributed every Friday in grade level labeled bins. The packet pick up location will be on the ramp by the pre-k doors on the car rider side of the ES. For work submission, there will be labeled grade level bins near the car rider entrance doors. If at all possible, we encourage you to take a picture of the work and submit it to your child’s teacher via email or other messaging platforms. Packets will be collected every Wednesday and Friday. Again, these packets are for students that have been having internet access issues. There are not enough packets for every student. If you are having internet access issues, please contact your child’s teacher. Thank you for your support as we continue our distance learning efforts. Be safe and go Wildcats!

It has been a sad and historic day for our State and our County. As many of you already know, Governor Kemp has issued a directive for schools to remain closed for the rest of the academic year. I am disappointed that we didn’t get to finish what we started as a student body and as a faculty. Our students, our faculty, and our staff showed tremendous grit and determination this year. I was looking forward to the strong finish that we were poised to have in May. It almost feels like a “loss” that we didn’t get a chance to finish the "game". Coach Paul “Bear” Bryant once said, “Losing doesn’t make me want to quit. It makes me want to fight that much harder.” Students, you still have a lot to fight for!!! Fight to maintain the progress that you have made this year! Our teachers are working hard to make sure that you stay “in shape” these last few weeks. You can do so by completing your online assignments, following the guidance of your parents, reading daily, practicing math facts, and having fun learning something new each day. Champions aren't satisfied with getting to the top; that is the easy part. Champions are the ones who fight to stay on top! I challenge each of you to keep fighting the fight, stay safe, and stay "in shape." Coach John Wooden said it best, “Things turn out best for the people who make the best of the way things turn out.” Things definitely didn't turn out the way we expected this year, but we ARE going to make the best of this situation. Keep working hard and stay safe. I look forward to the time when we will be back together. Sincerely, Tee Reddish

Dear Parents and Community Members, Schley County Schools have been in close contact with our local health department and our local emergency response team members. In addition to CDC guidance, we will continue to take the necessary steps to disinfect our school and transportation areas. Yesterday, Governor Kemp asked schools to consider closing for 14 calendar days to limit the spread of Covid-19. While there are no confirmed cases in Schley County at this time, there are cases in nearby counties. Out of concern for our students’ well-being and to limit exposure, all schools will be closed from March 16 through March 27. All buildings and buses will be disinfected using our Ecovasive system. We would ask that all jackets, backpacks, and school items that travel from home to school be cleaned as well. All 1:1 devices were sent home with chargers to facilitate any at-home learning opportunities. All teacher pages will have relevant guidance, as well as a posting from your child’s teacher for accessible hours each day. This type of event is unchartered territory for our country and our community. I greatly appreciate the support we receive at all times, but I truly am thankful for the resources we have here. Please take the necessary precautions for your children, yourselves, and your community. Avoid large group gatherings at all costs so that this loss of instruction time will not be in vain. I pray for everyone’s health and safety during this uncertain time. Sincerely, Brian Hall Superintendent

We participated in an informational meeting this morning concerning the Covid-19 virus as well as other common illnesses. Be assured that SCE, SCMHS, & the Schley County School System is taking precautions in order to help prevent the spread of illness. Some of these precautions include the following: Hand sanitizer dispensers on buses, disinfecting of buses, repeated disinfecting of common surfaces in the classrooms/building, and we are monitoring daily absence trends. SCE could use your help! If your child has a temp of 100 or more, please keep them home. They must be fever free for 24 hours before they can come to school. Don't forget to provide a doctor's note for the excuse. If your child runs a fever at school, they will be sent home so that they can get the medical treatment needed for a smooth recovery and return to school. Thank you for your support as we strive to keep our students well while they are at school.

3rd graders in Mrs. Waller's classroom have been studying animal adaptations in Science. After reading "What If You Had Animal Eyes", students chose an animal and took notes on the eyes being used as an adaptation. Students then conducted research using books off EPIC which is an online library of book collections and videos. To integrate writing, students collected information on the animal's habitat, their diet, and interesting facts about the animal. To tie all parts of the research together, students then accessed Book Creator from their individual laptops and created their own book. Everyone enjoyed making their books unique and sharing with their peers.

In efforts to reinforce learned concepts in Science and Social Studies, students in Mrs. Waller's 3rd grade class participated in multiple hands-on opportunities to demonstrate their knowledge. In efforts to retain information throughout a Fossil unit in Science, students collected leaves around the school, and made trace fossils. Students were also provided the opportunity to become paleontologists for a day. They were given toothpicks to use as tools. Then they were required to extract as many fossils as possible during a given time frame without breaking them. Throughout the activity, students realized extraction takes patience and ease in order to keep both your tool and fossil intact. Finally, students were assigned a Native American region. They were required to create a diorama that accurately portrayed the region. It was required to include examples of shelter, food, and other characteristics of the region. Students thoroughly enjoyed participating in the various activities.

3rd grade students in Mrs. Waller's class just completed a Rocks and Minerals Science unit. To reinforce what was learned throughout the unit, students created the three types of rocks using Starburst candy. Students began by stacking three Starbursts together forming layers, or Sedimentary rock. Afterwards, students covered the layers in tinfoil and applied pressure which changed the shape and created a Metamorphic rock. Finally, students placed their rocks in a toaster oven. Once the rocks melted and cooled, they were able to see an example of what an Igneous rock looks like. Students enjoyed seeing the transformations of the different types of rocks and identifying the changes that occurred to their candy.

All car riders will be dropped off and picked up on the side loop. Paving was completed last year to create a longer roadway in order to pull cars off of highway 19. Parents are asked to follow the road down to the softball/ baseball field parking, circle the cones, and return to merge into the existing loop. For pick up, please have your car rider cards available. You will be given direction by the caller each afternoon and assigned a number for the position to pull to alongside the new wing. Each station will have a number to help give you directions as to where to stop. We do ask that you do not use the front drive of the school during the dismissal time and only use the front at arrival if you as a parent intend to park in the front parking lot and enter the building. Extra personnel will be on hand to help with this pattern. As always your patience and support is greatly appreciated.
